Genomics are a revolutionary tool for dairy farmers in particular. They not only have the potential to create more efficient and more productive pathways to putting milk on the table, but stand to help design a healthier cow with higher standards of welfare throughout the industry. Genomics are a stellar example of what a partnership between science and farming can create, and therefore are an excellent topic to feature as part of any agricultural education syllabus. Below are a few resources including background information, a case study activity, and a quiz, that were developed for 4-H program use.  It is also appropriate for general middle and high school student age.  Instructors and students using this information will hopefully leave the classroom with a fundamental knowledge of the subject as well as a better understanding of what animal science looks like in the modern day.

 

 

Genetics in the Classroom This booklet outlines the principles of genomics, and gives the teacher the background to help facilitate an introductory lesson. The booklet could also be a good foundation in genomics for older students who may be interested in slightly more detail than the student flyer.

Student Information This document, geared towards younger students, provides a general introduction to the topic of genomic testing and using this data in herd management. It also provides key definitions as references.

Case Study Activity This activity puts classroom participants in the shoes of an everyday farmer, and hands the students the reigns to make decisions relating to a realistic scenario.

Genomics Quiz This quiz will allow students to reaffirm the information they have learned and will help teachers see what knowledge the students gained throughout the course of the activity.
